Wavelength is a subtopic from physics. Wavelength is basically the distance calculated between two peaks of a wave. Or, it could also be the length between two corresponding points. It is calculated in smooth waves which gives you a reliable estimation. Wavelengths can be calculated of different things such as light, sound, etc. Wavelength is denoted by “lambda”.

Wavelength is calculated by having frequency and velocity readings. Wavelength is inversely proportional to frequency. This denotes that higher frequency means shorter wavelength while lower frequency means longer wavelength.

## Types of wavelength

Moving on, we are brought towards the kind of wavelengths in studies. There are two types of wavelengths we will discuss: electromagnetic wavelength spectrum and light wavelength.

## Electromagnetic Wavelength Spectrum

Before we get to the wavelengths of electromagnetic spectrum, we will first put some light on electromagnetic spectrum. Electromagnetic spectrum is a combination of all rays omitted by electromagnetic radiation. We come across so many electromagnetic spectrum emissions in our every day routine, for example: radio, microwave, infrared, X-ray, Ultraviolet rays, etc. that will be discussed later on with its uses.

Since these are all forms of radiations, they are also calculated through wavelengths. They contain some kind of energy and frequency in them, making up waves. The electromagnetic spectrum is said to have continuous waves. It is endless. Electromagnetic spectrum contains gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet light, visible light, infrared, microwave, and radio waves. Gamma rays are used in places where you have to kill bacteria or to sterilize any medical equipment. X-rays are commonly known which displays the image of our bones. Ultraviolet light is not seen by a human eye but bees can see it clearly because they have the frequency to view it. Visible light is used by people in everything so we can observe our surroundings. Infrared rays are used as heat sensors or for night vision. Then we have microwave oven in our homes which sends microwaves. Radio waves are used for television and radio broadcasts.

Electromagnetic spectrum waves are calculated in the same way with frequency and velocity.

## Light wavelength

Here, we are talking about the visible light which is subdivided by electromagnetic spectrum (as discussed before). The things we see with our eyes all contains this particular electromagnetic radiation. If it was not visible light, we would not be seeing it with our eyes. The Visible light falls between infrared rays and ultraviolet rays. The LED diode is a device which emits visible light when electric current passes through it. The Visible light contains a set of colors (colors of rainbow). The violet color in this collection is said to have the shortest wavelength while on the other hand red color has the longest wavelength.

There is a standard calculation given for wavelengths of each color, as stated below:

• Red: 622 to 780 nm
• Orange: 597 to 622 nm
• Yellow: 577 to 597 nm
• Green: 492 to 577 nm
• Blue: 455 to 492 nm
• Violet: 390 to 455 nm

You must have noticed that as the colors were proceeding towards violet color, the wavelength kept decreasing.

Wavelength of Visible light can be calculated with its frequency and velocity.
